Known worldwide as a laser company, Candela Corporation, (Marlborough, Mass.) also offers a spectrum of devices in the microneedling space. Rounding out the company’s array of microneedling devices is the latest offering, the Profound Matrix® system, which features the new Matrix Pro® short-pulse radiofrequency (RF) microneedling applicator. The Profound Matrix system also includes Sublative RF and Sublime applicators to deliver three powerful and unique treatments. “I am completely obsessed with this device,” said dermatologist Stacy Chimento, MD, director of Riverchase Dermatology (Bay Harbor Islands, Fla.). “I can treat many skin indications between its three technologies.”

Each of Matrix Pro’s sterile, single-use disposable cartridges have an array of 49 microelectrode chamfered microneedles – the thinnest array on the market.* The needle size, combined with the smooth motion and gentle launch speed, minimizes insertion trauma while delivering short pulse RF energy simultaneously through the distal portion of each microneedle during treatment. This creates a pattern of multi-layer thermal injuries with a single pass. Known as Depth Intelligence™, this technology deposits energy at up to three depths of tissue – separated by at least 0.8 mm – with each insertion, while also measuring impedance.

“It features a great feedback mechanism with real-time impedance monitoring that maximizes precise energy delivery with each insertion, giving us the best outcomes consistently and reproducibly**,” Dr. Chimento added. Impedance, or resistance, is key to how the RF energy interacts with tissue; it also changes with differences in temperature and tissue type, making real-time feedback a valuable asset. “When we know exactly where and how much heat is being delivered, we get the best possible results.** This prevents us from over- or under-treating and keeps us away from fatty tissue, which is very important when treating the face. All these innovations that impact outcomes are why I replaced numerous other devices with this system.”

Sublative RF delivers fractional RF using sterile, single-use, disposable tips featuring an array of multi-electrode pins, rather than needles, for ablation and resurfacing of the skin. A smaller footprint from the 44-pin tip excels for more challenging anatomy such as the nasal ala, periorbital and perioral regions, while the 64- pin tip is suitable for larger areas. Sublime delivers needle-free bipolar RF plus gentle infrared light – infrared radiation (IR) at wavelengths between 700 nm and 2000 nm – which heats superficial and deeper tissue at depths of 3 mm – 4 mm. This combination’s electro-optical synergy reduces associated risk and discomfort without sacrificing results. “Overall, patients in my practice love the treatment comfort and the results**,” noted Dr. Chimento.

Enjoying two of Candela’s other microneedling devices — the Profound® system, and the Exceedmedical microneedling device — Dr. Chimento has experienced the wider suite of Candela microneedling devices. “The Profound system is a powerhouse for me. It is excellent for people looking for a one-time treatment to improve collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid and restore a more youthful look to the face but who are not yet ready for or interested in going under the knife for a facelift.1,2 And in my experience, the Exceed microneedling device is a beautiful gateway treatment; it is gentle and more ‘accessible’ to many, but the outcomes both satisfy patients and drive interest in what else we can do.”
